Parma, 1st September 2018 – Following the Crociati’s 2-1 defeat to Juventus on Saturday evening, Coach Roberto D’Aversa spoke to the media in the Stadio Tardini press room.
Here’s what he had to say:
“We conceded at the start and it was against a team of this magnitude. We needed a bit more grit, but we did well to remain in the match. We scored an equaliser and then missed a chance to take the lead at the end of the first half. The team’s attitude was important tonight and from this perspective, the lads did well. I hope that this attitude will become a main part of our DNA going forwards and that it will not depend just on the opposition. If we play like we did tonight then we can achieve our objective.
“Was it a foul for Juve’s first goal? No one complained and I don’t think it was a foul. In these type of situations, you pay for a lack of physicality. Gervinho? Playing him from the start was a gamble. He had to stop during the week after two intense training sessions. He is an important player, but at the moment we can’t afford any more injuries. Therefore, taking him off was not a technical choice but rather one linked to his physical condition. Both him and Rigoni dropped off a bit at the start of the second half.
“Gervinho is an important player, and his work rate surprised me in training, but he’s not alone. There’s also Inglese and Grassi, who didn’t play today due to an injury against Spal, while Gagliolo and Iacoponi also did well. How to improve? As for improvements, we are still a bit disappointed with the result, as the case against Udinese, and also against Spal when we struggled with shots on goal but did have a solid chance towards the end. The team’s formation? People say that I never change the formation, but last year we played with a three-man defence when we were struggling and then we finished the season with the best defensive record by playing with mostly four at the back. It is not the change in the formation that matters, but rather the players that I have available. For example, right now I only have five defenders available. What I can at in this moment is simply to keep working.
“Tonight was a great evening of sport thanks to the support. Salvation will be achieved particularly at home, while both the club and the fans have shown that they deserve to be in this division.”
